Gail D’Onofrio, M.D., M.S., is the Chief of the Section of Emergency Medicine and Associate Professor at Yale University School of Medicine. She is also the Chief of adult Emergency Services at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Dr. D’Onofrio is well known for her work in substance abuse and women’s health. Her specific research focus is motivating patients to change high-risk behaviors. She is the Project Director of Project ASSERT, initially a New Haven Fighting Back initiative funded by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, that utilizes community advocates for screening Emergency Department patients for a variety of health needs including alcohol and other drug and providing appropriate intervention in the ED. She has received funding from the National Institutes of Heath for a clinical trial evaluating the effects of brief intervention in the ED by emergency physicians to patients identified as harmful and hazardous drinking. She has written numerous articles, textbook chapter and editorial commentaries as well as prepared many education tools for health professionals, including videos, toolkits and teaching modules. She is the Medical Director of the Women’s Heart Advantage Program at Yale New Haven Hospital. She received her B.S. from Duke University and both her M.S. and Doctorate of Medicine from Boston University. She completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Boston City Hospital, Boston University School of Medicine. She also completed a Fellowship in Substance Abuse while at Boston University funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP).
