Jennifer G. Smith, M.D., provides patient care and teaches medicine as a general internist. Her work focuses on bringing prevention and treatment for substance use disorders into mainstream health care. She leads the Cook County Bureau of Health Services’ participation in the CSAT-funded Illinois SBIRT Initiative, implementing screening and brief intervention for substance use disorders in the Bureau’s hospitals and health centers. Another program she initiated partners community members in addiction recovery with primary care physicians to support patients with substance use problems. Dr. Smith is a 2000 Fellow of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Developing Leadership in Reducing Substance Abuse Program, and is certified in addiction medicine by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. She received her doctorate in medicine from Brown University and trained in internal medicine at Harlem Hospital Center, Columbia University in New York City. She is currently a Senior Attending in General Medicine & Primary Care at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Rush Medical College.
